چکیده

The diet of tripletail, Lobotes .I'urinamellsis, collected from the Mississippi Sound and Mississippi's offshore waters of the Gulf of Mexico between April and September 1995-1997, was investigated through analysis of stomach contents. Of 178 tripJctail stomachs examined, 136 (76%) contained prey items, and 42 (24%) were empty. TripletaiJ with prey in their stomachs ranged from 183 to 787111111 totallcngth (mean 522.6 111m) and 0.14 to 10.5 kg total weight (mean 3.64 kg). The diet consisted 01'32 different prey types and was complj~ed uf ",hrill.ljJ, crab"" <:uld tdco:,l fi.'>hes which were represented by about equal number and volumeofprey but differed in relative importance to the diet, with fishes having greater importance. Principal contributors to the diet were FCII:!'allfepenaeus azt('cus, Callincctes sapidus, Brevoortio patrol1/./s, and Chlol'Oscomhrus c/1IYSlII'US. The variety of prey in the diet suggested that tripletail fed opportunistically.

Grouped Tooth Replacement in the Oral Jaws of the Tripletail, Lobotes surinamensis (Perciformes: Lobotidae), with a Discussion of Its Proposed Relationship to Datnioides

Lobotes surinamensis is a widely distributed marine perciform and is the sole member of the family Lobotidae, which has unclear phylogenetic affinities. In this paper we describe and illustrate a mode of tooth replacement in Lobotes that we name ‘‘grouped’’ tooth replacement. Lateral oral teeth are replaced intraosseously, i.e., developing replacement teeth can clearly be seen beneath them with...

Morphometric comparisons of plant-mimetic juvenile fish associated with plant debris observed in the coastal subtropical waters around Kuchierabu-jima Island, southern Japan

The general morphological shape of plant-resembling fish and plant parts were compared using a geometric morphometrics approach. Three plant-mimetic fish species, Lobotes surinamensis (Lobotidae), Platax orbicularis (Ephippidae) and Canthidermis maculata (Balistidae), were compared during their early developmental stages with accompanying plant debris (i.e., leaves of several taxa) in the coast...

Pycnoscelus surinamensis cockroach gut microbiota respond consistently to a fungal diet without mirroring those of fungus-farming termites

The gut microbiotas of cockroaches and termites play important roles in the symbiotic digestion of dietary components, such as lignocellulose. Diet has been proposed as a primary determinant of community structure within the gut, acting as a selection force to shape the diversity observed within this "bioreactor", and as a key factor for the divergence of the termite gut microbiota from the omn...
